FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is an organization that was founded in 1989 by the inventor of the Segway, Dean Kamen and a Mechanical Engineering Professor at MIT, Woodie Flowers. The purpose of FIRST is to encourage students to pursue a future in engineering and technology fields.
Firsts philosophy of collaboration and teamwork among groups of engineers, teachers, mentors and students to give students the ability to get hands on experience with various robotic coding programs, and to help them further develop an interest in the fields of engineering and science that the Modern World needs. FIRST holds a variety of robotic competitions that simulate sports, however, FIRST as an organization greatly pushes for competing teams to remain friendly, helping each other out when necessary, and never promoting victory over learning and fun. This is called Gracious Professionalism, a term coined by Woodie that supports respect towards ones competitors and integrity in ones actions.
